If you are interested in singing or recording your own stuff like yours truly then some of this may be of interest to you. It ranges from free recording software to lyrics and so on. There is also a ton of stuff you can put on your mp3 player.

Real “free” music

I should say “royalty free” or “in the public domain”. You won’t find anything here that breaks the law. I have taken great care in choosing links that DO NOT promote illegal activity. If you do find one of these links questionable please let me know so I can check it out.

Pdinfo.com is by far the best place to start if you want to get started picking songs to sing or record free of charge. Most have lyrics and midi’s to get you started. With a couple of programs you are on your way to making your own stuff!

Royalty free music  This is a link page but there is a bunch of good stuff to be found.

The Internet Audio Guy has some free stuff that is short and easy to use great for your videos or home movies.

www.archive.org is a collection of audio files and other stuff that you can listen to on you mp3 player but usage varies so check the disclaimer. Much of it is old time rockabilly and such but have a look. It’s fun to wade through old radio broadcasts and the like.

http://www.mutopiaproject.org/ is an archive that contains free sheet music that is in the public domain. Mostly classical and geared towards the music student.

 

Software (also free)

There is so much software out there that I just can’t keep up to date with it all. My favorite program is Audacity it’s a sound editor, Otherwise known as a digital audio multi-track recorder and editor. Record your own CD quality audio with your home pc. 100% free.

http://www.synthzone.com has a great link page for a great deal of audio software, mostly free stuff.

Music Laboratory has some great tools.

MIDInight Express II—The web site for this midi player seems to be down but you can get it from a google search . It’s a great program that can, if you know how change a simple midi file into real music. Spend some time and learn how to use it. It is an older program and a little ugly but works great and 100% free.
